Truth and the Shade

He speaks truly who speaks the shade

Paul Celan

The shade moves without being a movement and escapes without even moving; what disappears and appears and what is neither presence nor absence. The poem inscribes at the heart of truth and philosophy what they cannot contain, a moment eluding the sun and clarity. But perhaps truth cannot think the shade because it is nothing but a shade and because it is itself what it excludes and represses, the obscurity and non-decidedness that destabilize philosophy forever, or perhaps philosophy is itself this instability since it is nothing but the non-decidedness that the philosophical prohibits.
